Can your husband be your best friend?

Posted on 06 Jun 2011

That's the seemingly innocent question I set out to answer when I offered to write a feature for The Times' T2 section this week on that very subject.

Friendship, and all its many forms, lies at the centre of To My Best Friends, so I wanted to explore all aspects of it - not just the relationship between Nicci, Mona, Lizzie and Jo (the female characters who make up the book's heart) but also the male character, David, who is so much more than 'just' Nicci's husband. As the other women discover as the story progresses.

Pretty harmless, I thought. Not least because researchers are always banging on about the fact that most successful marriages are usually founded on friendship.

Oh-ho ho ho. How wrong can you be?!

So, in answer to the question, is your husband your best friend? My answer would be: yes, Jon is my best friend (which is not to say I don't have a group of great girlfriends that I rely on for pink wine and chats and, you know, validation) and I'm proud!

Find out what a can of worms that opened here. (I apologise in advance, if you can't get past the Times paywall. I'll find a way to post the pdf soon.)
