The first stepmums' support group
Posted on 07 Aug 2009
The Stepmothers' Support Group went live for the first time this week when we recreated one in an East London bar for a feature you'll be able to see in the October issue of Red.
Let me tell you, it is NOT easy to persuade stepmums to talk on the record. There's a reason for that. There are no rules for being a stepmum, more like guidelines - and a whopping great list of Don'ts. But the Dos? Just don't, OK? And whilst many people were super-keen to talk off-the-record, on it was an entirely different matter. In fact, I think 'that'll have to be off-the-record' was the catch phrase of the day.
Poor Steph, the journalist who was pulling together the feature for Red, had a total mare, with one case study pulling out less than an hour before the interview. But she's a brave girl, she's persuaded the unlikeliest celebrities to get naked for the Daily Mail, so a few talk-shy stepmothers weren't going to defeat her. The results will be in the October issue of Red, but here are a couple of snaps from the day (that's me in the middle, with the big hair).
And a big thanks to Maureen, Sally, Sunny and Nicola. I'd be proud - not to mention very lucky - to have you guys as my very own SSG.
